Although it still doesn’t feel like summer out there yet, the large volume of email and telephone enquiries we are beginning to receive from prospective customers shows that the peak moving months of June, July and August (when removal companies are at their very busiest) cannot be far away.

For several months now, we have wanted to try and get a photograph of as many of our removal vans as possible all lined up. A few weeks ago, we had a last minute cancellation in the afternoon and so decided to wash the available vans and line them up in a car-park behind Toys R Us and the cinema close to Gloucester Quays. I think the photograph turned out quite well.

Whilst many of you were probably enjoying Easter with your families back in March, we carried out a very large delivery for a Tetbury based business to the Ideal Home Exhibition at Earls Court in London.

We have got several removal jobs this week in and around the Cheltenham area, but fortunately, nothing too close to the racecourse. Today is the start of the annual Cheltenham Festival, and traffic around the racecourse is normally very busy before and after the start of racing. Yesterday, we were asked to visit Harewood Infant School in Tuffley, Gloucester to give a small talk to the pupils who have been doing a project about ‘moving house’ and wanted to see a real life removal van. We spent several hours at the school, showing five different classes around the removals van. We showed them different sized cardboard moving boxes, blankets, a piano dolly etc, etc.

We were quite nervous about whether the children would be interested in what we had to show them, but I think they enjoyed themselves. I hope the smiles on their faces weren’t just because they were missing maths lessons! It was nice to do something completely different and we had a good time too.

Despite the snowfall and icy conditions that have been gripping Gloucestershire over the past week or so (it is actually snowing outside as I type this), it has been business as usual for our Gloucestershire removals firm. Newman Removals haven’t had to cancel any removals, or let customers down. In fact, the snowy weather has actually led to us gaining extra removals work…

At 7.30am on Saturday, I took a phone call from a ‘damsel in distress’ who was moving house that day from Ledbury to Cheltenham. Two separate local removals companies had cancelled at very late notice – both blaming the snow and ice. Glad to be asked to help, we managed to get two Luton type removals vans over to Ledbury on Saturday afternoon (after we had carried out our other booked-in work). The roads were extremely tricky in places, but we left a very happy customer and her belongings, fully moved-into the new Cheltenham property early on Saturday evening.

January can often be a quiet month in the removals business, but so far, January 2013 has been much busier than expected. Our ‘man with a van’ service has been in demand, and we have also been asked to supply cardboard boxes to customers taking the DIY approach to moving house.

We have carried out several removals in and around the Thornbury and Almondsbury areas of the past few weeks. Although just a 30 minute drive down the A38 from Gloucester, Thornbury is an area we have never had too much to do with, until recently. Thanks to some customers who we moved from Tewkesbury to Thornbury last summer, they have recommended us to several of their ‘moving’ friends. I’m not sure if all Bristol removal companies are expensive, but the most recent customer we moved in Thornbury said we charged almost half the amount she had been quoted by a Bristol firm!

Self storage work has also been keeping us busy this month. We are fairly confident that our storage prices are unbeatable and will not be beaten by any of our competitors (particularly the large out of town warehouse firms). Over the past month, Newman Removals have experienced some very unusual extremes in the weather whilst carrying out house and office removals. We have worked in pouring rain, thick mud and galeforce winds. Last weekend, on a long-distance removal near to Aberdeen in Scotland – a round-trip of almost 900 miles, we even worked in snowy conditions.

Yesterday morning, with a booked removal at a converted warehouse apartment in Gloucester Docks it was the turn of sub-zero temperatures, freezing fog and sheet ice. On arrival at the docks just after 8am, the main dock basin looked stunning with a blanket of freezing fog in the air and a thin sheet of ice on the water. It was a bitterly cold start to our working day but we soon warmed up once we started to carry the contents of the apartment down to the removals van.

Yesterday morning, Gloucester Docks had a beautiful, almost eerie feel with the freezing fog in the air. Newman Removals were in Gloucester carrying out a removal from one of the lovely converted warehouse flats. Please contact us for all your removal needs.

A few weeks ago, we carried out a removal at a house in in Middle Lypiatt, Stroud. Amongst the many items that we had to move was a grand piano, an upright piano, a compost toilet and a large yurt! The conditions were the wettest that I have ever experienced in over 20 years of working in removals. Really, it was very wet. The driveway leading to the customer’s property was so muddy (really thick mud) that we couldn’t get anywhere near the house with the Luton style removal vans. Newman Removals can be very resourceful when needed and after a few telephone calls, a four-wheel drive vehicle was called upon to help out. The job was completed on time and the customer was very pleased with our work.

Piano Removals
As local experts in piano removals, we have recently been kept busy with moving both upright and grand piano’s all over Gloucestershire. Many of these jobs have been where customers have bought a piano off websites such as Ebay or Gumtree, and need to get it collected. Many piano’s have been bought as gifts for a loved one. From what I can tell, there are several people in Gloucestershire who will be waking up on December 25th to find a piano in their Christmas stocking.

We have been asked to move three piano’s in the past week alone. I never knew there were so many piano’s out there. Even an upright piano can be very heavy and extremely difficult (and even dangerous) to move unless you know what you are doing. Our advice is not to risk injury to yourself or the piano. Each week Newman Removals travel literally hundreds of miles across the length and breadth of the UK carrying out house and office removals for our valued customers. In the early morning we can be making deliveries from Cheltenham to London and then after lunch find ourselves heading down the M5 towards Cornwall with a van load of furniture and personal effects. Last week however, Newman Removals “went into Europe” with our first ever removals job to Poland!

Collecting the items from a house in Painswick, we were asked to make the delivery to a small village called Wymój in Northern Poland. We left Gloucestershire on Tuesday evening, joining the midnight ferry across to Calais, before embarking on a very long drive across mainland Europe meeting the customer as agreed on Thursday morning.

Less than 48 hours after this photograph was taken, the container of furniture and effects was delivered to the customer in a small village in Poland.

Taking a more leisurely drive back, we arrived back home in Gloucester (exhausted but happy!) at 3am on Saturday morning. The total mileage we covered on the trip was a staggering 2386 miles.

Earlier in the month, we were delighted to be asked to deliver/collect some bakery equipment from Hackney, Nailsworth and Chipping Sodbury on behalf of the Fabulous Baker Boys, who I believe have been filming their 2nd television series for Channel 4. Regular visitors to this website might recall that we delivered some equipment to a studio in London for them about this time last year when they filmed their excellent first series. I’m not sure when we can see the boys on screen, but we will be watching the new series with real interest.

The summer months are always the busiest time for any removals company, and the summer of 2012 has been no different. We have been pretty much working seven days a week for the past couple of months in order to take advantage of the seasonal demand for us to carry out house removals. One job recently saw us loading furniture and personal belongings onto two removal vans on the Saturday afternoon and drive the 346 miles to Edinburgh, stopping off for an ovenight sleep en-route. As requested by the customer, we arrived at the specified property address in Edinburgh on the Sunday morning to unload, before making the long journey back to Gloucestershire.

We have been carrying out removals all over Gloucestershire, and there aren’t many parts of the county that we haven’t recently been to. You name the place and we have probably made deliveries to it, including Stroud, Dursley, Wotton-under-Edge, Tewkesbury, Cheltenham, Lydney and South Cerney. Newman Removals have recently added to our fleet of vehicles with the purchase of a small Citroën van. The van has been signwritten and hopefully, you will see it on the roads throughout Gloucestershire. We will use this small van when visiting prospective customer’s to give removals advice and quotations, and when delivering carboard boxes for moving.

This small van will also be used for small removals jobs where the customer just has a couple of items that need moving. We recently used it for a customer in Tewkesbury that wanted us to put 14 boxes of office paperwork into dehumidified archive storage for them. Rather than using much bigger vehicles for this type of work, we hope that it will help us reduce our carbon footprint and help with our green credentials. With the price of diesel at record levels, we also hope it will save us some money and allow us to offer you the customer even better value.
